egalecentreAs I have mentioned earlier, I am co-Chairing (with Ed Clark) the Project Campaign for a new LGBTQ Youth homeless centre in downtown Toronto, and I am thrilled to announce that the project is progressing very well.  Our Youth Homeless Shelter is coming to fruition.  To date, we have secured $6.5 million of our $8.5 million goal (77%, both capital and operating).   The official public launch of this project will be May 31st.

Located at the corner of Dundas St and Sherbourne Street, this 35-bed homeless centre will be the first of its kind in Canada.  The city has provided us with a building (see above), and we are about to begin the renovations.  Providing counselling and crisis services with transitional housing, this will be an important asset to tackling youth homelessness in the country’s largest city.  Our operating partners are Dixon Hall and Fife House.

Many operating partners have been brought to the project to date:  Daniels Corporation (construction), Sustainable TO (architecture), Yabu Pushelberg (design), Deloitte (consulting), Navigator (communications and marketing), and the City of Toronto.

And, of course, many campaign partners have stepped up to help:  Intact Financial, TD Financial Group, RBC Financial Group, CIBC, BMO Financial, Scotiabank, Blakes, McCarthy Tetrault, Osler, Torys, Power Corporation, KPMG, National Bank Financial, Sun Life Financial, Telus, McKinsey & Company, and ManuLife Financial.

Can you help us out?  I am leading an effort known as the Safe Centre Champions, a group of 100 individuals who have each pledged $10,000 over a four year period (pledged either in a lump sum, annually, quarterly, or monthly).  This group will be a critical long-term support base for the operation going forward, and your participation will be an important contribution to its long term success.  Simply contact me and let me know your interest.

I will post further updates as construction progresses toward our opening day!
